When I was a child, to escape a traumatic upbringing, I would escape outside to Nature, who held me and cared for me in a way no one else could. Over the years, through the many different teachings I’d delved into for guidance and support- Social Work, Taoism and Witchcraft, Indigenous & Shamanic Traditions, Channelling Archetypes & Spirit Guides, Tarot, Numerology, and Astrology- the plants always found a way of slipping in to join me. Even as I looked elsewhere to the Stars and Cosmic Beings, perhaps looking to escape the drudgery of my reality, I was being guided to ecosystem restoration, organic farming, and herbalism, gaining experience growing my own food, foraging, harvesting, and preparing my own herbal remedies and medicines. I have always returned to the woods.
Now, as I enter into the Crone stages of my life, I find these weaving together into one great web, initiated, of course, by the Plant Beings. They have brought this to me: A vastness of awareness of Life and OnesSelf that I could never quite reach; the courage to step forward with an opening heart, to take the risk of being fully present, with all of it, the beautiful, the ugly, the frightening- the light and the dark that are both essential to all of our existence.
I have had the privilege of communing with many of these Plant Beings through my Dietas, including Blue Water Lily, Cacao, Rose, Rue, Mugwort, Sage, Bobinsana, and Douglas Fir. I have communed with Ayahuasca, Psilocybin, and Tobacco, and have been initiated to serve Hapeh. To me, the beauty is that these Allies are all around us, waiting to connect and guide us home- both as the Master Plants of wild jungles and the humble teachers nestled in our own backyards.
When we are able to make peace with the past, to accept, allow, and embrace all of who we are, we begin to experience the vastness of not only this world, but also countless others beyond our own. We can come back home to ourselves, to Know that we belong here, between the sweet dirt of the Earth under us and the incomprehensibly grand Cosmos above us.
